Dr. McCarthy leads NERA’s U.S. Health Care Practice. He specializes in
the economic analysis of regulatory, public policy, and litigation matters
in health care markets, including the economics of intellectual property
protection and the estimation of contract, trade dress, trade secret, and
patent damages. Often these intellectual property issues involve medical
equipment and devices, though Dr. McCarthy has worked in a wide variety
of other industries as well, including supermarket equipment, computer
hardware, greeting cards, and CD-Rs. Before joining NERA, Dr.
McCarthy taught at Oakland University, served as a graduate instructor at
the University of Maryland, and was a staff economist with the Federal
Trade Commission. He has published several papers on antitrust damages
and health care issues in the Journal of Health Economics and in American
Bar Association publications. He is also co-editor and principal author of
a year-long, two-volume study of health care financing reform in 12
industrialized countries, published by Kluwer.
